About the studio
Sony Music Communications, now renamed Sony Music Solutions after a 2019 merger with Sony DADC Japan and Jared, has roots going back to 1982 as the Graphic Arts division of CBS/Sony, becoming an independent company in 1987 and taking the Sony Music Communications name in 1991. Based in Tokyo, it's not a record label itself but a merchandising, packaging, and event production company, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan. *The company that makes sure the merch table and the physical packaging look as good as the music sounds.* Since 2011, it's repeatedly appeared on production committees for anime, mostly titles connected to Kadokawa and the former Media Factory. Nearly four decades removed from its origins as a graphic design department, this company's evolution into event production and merchandising shows how far a single support function can grow within a large entertainment conglomerate.
