Synopsis

Ippo Makunouchi spends his days getting bullied and helping his mother run the family fishing boat, with zero confidence and even less of a plan for his life. A chance rescue by a boxer named Takamura pulls him into a gym, and almost by accident, Ippo discovers he has real talent for the sport. What follows is a classic underdog boxing story done exceptionally well: grueling training, escalating rivals, and a shy kid slowly transforming into a genuine contender, one brutal, hard-won round at a time. It earns every bit of its reputation as one of the greatest sports anime ever made.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Hajime no Ippo is based on George Morikawa's long-running manga, animated first by Madhouse, with the original television series airing from 2000 to 2002 and continuing across multiple sequel seasons and OVAs in the years since. It is consistently ranked among the finest sports anime ever produced, praised for its technically accurate boxing choreography, its patient character development, and its willingness to let training and small victories feel as dramatic as any championship bout. Decades after its debut, Ippo's journey remains a benchmark reference point for how to tell a sports underdog story properly.
