Story

Synopsis

Two centuries after turning into sea foam following a tragic, unrequited romance with a human prince, the mythical mermaid Lara unexpectedly reawakens in contemporary Japan with her human form restored. Haunted by distant ocean memories and the bitter heartache of her past sacrifice, she wanders through modern urban landscapes fascinated by human civilization's dizzying evolution. Struggling to comprehend modern societal complexities, Lara forms tender connections with lonely city dwellers seeking meaning in their own lives. Her bittersweet quest for emotional closure transforms into a profound exploration of mortality, enduring love, and reconciliation between two worlds.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
An original television anime production by studio Kinema Citrus, this poetic series is directed by Takushi Koide, renowned for his creative contributions to *Revue Starlight*. Premiering in July 2026 and concluding in September 2026, the anime reimagines Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale *The Little Mermaid* through an introspective modern lens. The production achieved high critical regard for its breathtaking watercolor art direction, evocative orchestral soundtrack, and emotionally mature meditation on romantic sacrifice, grief, and personal renewal across changing generations.
