Synopsis

Concluding the storyline of the original 2003 anime series, this film finds Edward Elric living in Munich, Germany, in 1923, having been hurled through the Gate into our parallel, non-magical world. Unable to use alchemy, Ed works on rocketry alongside Alfons Heiderich, seeking a way back to his homeworld. His efforts intersect with the Thule Society, an occult paramilitary faction led by Dietlinde Eckart, which plots to open the gateway to Shamballa, Ed's alchemy world, to loot magical technology for Hitler's upcoming Beer Hall Putsch. Meanwhile in Amestris, Alphonse Elric searches desperately for his lost older brother.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The Thule Society breaches the Gate, launching an armored zeppelin armada and mechanical soldiers into Central City, causing catastrophic destruction. Alphonse uses alchemy to defend the city while Ed pilots an experimental rocket plane through the portal, reuniting with Al after years of separation. Together with Roy Mustang, the brothers defeat Dietlinde Eckart's bio-mechanical armor. Knowing the Gate will invite endless war if left open, Ed chooses to return to Munich to seal the portal from the other side. Alphonse secretly stows away, choosing exile with his brother over staying behind in Amestris.
