About the studio
Bones was founded in October 1998 by three ex-Sunrise staffers: Masahiko Minami, Hiroshi Ōsaka, and Toshihiro Kawamoto. The name is a nod to the studio's original eight person staff, small enough to be just bones, and honestly, that scrappy origin fits its reputation. Based in Igusa, Suginami, Tokyo, Bones went from a small startup to the studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist (both versions), My Hero Academia, and Mob Psycho 100. *From eight people to some of the most technically impressive action animation in the industry, that's a glow up.* Bones has built a name for fluid, kinetic fight choreography that other studios get compared to, which is a nice problem to have. Over 25 years since its founding, it remains one of the most consistently praised studios for pure animation craft, the kind fans point to when they want to argue anime deserves to be taken seriously as an art form.
