Story

Synopsis

This prequel returns to Haruka Nanase's middle school years, before the friendships and rivalries that define the television series had settled into their eventual shape. Makoto is there, Rin has already left for Australia, and the relationships between the boys are still being negotiated rather than assumed. The film explores how Haruka's relationship with water became the defining fact of his life, and how a group that would later seem inevitable was actually assembled through considerable friction. Every relationship the main series assumes was actually built through considerable friction.

Produced by Kyoto Animation and adapted from Kouji Ouji's High Speed novel, Starting Days serves as a prequel to the Free! television series. The franchise became one of Kyoto Animation's most commercially significant properties, notable for an enormous international fanbase and for swimming animation that treats the sport with genuine technical attention. This film gave longtime viewers the origin material the television series had only referenced, filling in relationships that the main story treats as established fact. Its prequel structure gave longtime viewers backstory the television seasons only referenced.
