Synopsis

Ten years before the events of Fate/stay night, seven mages summon seven heroic spirits to fight for the Holy Grail, an artifact capable of granting any wish. Kiritsugu Emiya fights as a man who has decided that saving the greatest number of people justifies any atrocity along the way, opposed by Kirei Kotomine, a priest who cannot understand his own capacity for cruelty. The war becomes a philosophical argument conducted through violence, and everyone involved discovers exactly what the Grail is actually willing to grant.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written by Gen Urobuchi and produced by ufotable, Fate/Zero adapts a prequel novel series and is frequently recommended as the strongest entry point into the sprawling Fate franchise. Urobuchi's characteristically bleak thematic concerns pair effectively with ufotable's high-budget action animation, producing what many consider the franchise's peak. Its interrogation of utilitarian ethics, heroism, and the impossibility of saving everyone gave it credibility with viewers who had no prior investment in the franchise's dense, often confusing wider mythology. Its cast of morally compromised adults gives the franchise genuine dramatic weight, and the war's outcome recontextualizes the entire Fate timeline that follows.
