Synopsis

A samurai lord traded his newborn son's body parts to demons in exchange for prosperity, and that son grew up as Hyakkimaru, surviving without limbs, eyes, or a voice, and killing demons to reclaim each piece one at a time. Traveling with Dororo, an orphaned child thief who attaches herself to him, he cuts through a war-torn countryside where the human cruelty is frequently worse than anything supernatural. Each restored body part brings back a sense he never had, which turns out to be a mixed blessing at best.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Osamu Tezuka's manga by MAPPA and Tezuka Productions, this 2019 version modernizes a comparatively obscure work by the father of modern manga, and it was widely praised for taking the grim source material seriously rather than softening it. Its engagement with wartime suffering, sacrifice, and whether a life can be built out of what was stolen gave it real thematic weight. The adaptation earned strong critical reception and introduced Tezuka's darker output to viewers who knew him primarily through Astro Boy. Its unflinching depiction of wartime suffering gave the adaptation genuine dramatic weight throughout.
