Story

Synopsis

Following decades of harrowing global warfare, Joe Shimamura and his eight cybernetic comrades enjoy well-earned, peaceful civilian retirements in Texas. Global stability appears secure under the protection of the United Nations Guardian forces, rendering the legendary cyborg heroes obsolete. However, American investigative journalist Lucie Davenport discovers disturbing evidence that the Bresudo, an elusive cabal of immortal superhuman schemers who have manipulated world history since ancient antiquity, have emerged from the shadows. When deadly assassins target Lucie and the world faces technological collapse, the cyborg veterans reactivate their mechanical enhancements to defend humanity.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
OLM Digital and Signal.MD produced this full 3D CGI theatrical anime film, released across Japanese cinemas in November 2016 as the opening chapter of a celebratory three-part trilogy. Directed by Kodai Kakimoto with chief direction by Kenji Kamiyama, the production commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of Shotaro Ishinomori's iconic superhero manga *Cyborg 009*. The project modernized the classic characters with contemporary action dynamics, cel-shaded digital character models, and a propulsive rock theme song performed by the band MONKEY MAJIK, introducing Ishinomori's iconic cyborg coalition to modern audiences.
