Synopsis

Yusuke Urameshi dies saving a kid from traffic and gets a second chance at life as a Spirit Detective, tasked with investigating supernatural cases that blur the line between the human world and the demon realm. What starts as small-time supernatural policing escalates fast into tournament arcs, demon politics, and life-or-death duels against increasingly powerful opponents. Alongside his rival-turned-friend Kuwabara, the elegant fox spirit Kurama, and the fire demon Hiei, Yusuke grows from a delinquent nobody into one of the most respected fighters in a world he never asked to be part of.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Based on Yoshihiro Togashi's manga, Yu Yu Hakusho is considered one of the foundational shonen action series of the nineties, shaping the tournament-arc formula that countless later shows would borrow from. Studio Pierrot's adaptation is beloved for its distinct character designs and surprisingly dark, mature undertones for its era, including genuinely tragic backstories among its villains. Its influence stretches into the modern day, with a 2023 live-action Netflix adaptation reintroducing the story to a new generation while longtime fans continue to hold up the original anime as a classic of the genre.
