Synopsis

Tatsuhiro Satou has been a hikikomori for four years, rarely leaving his apartment and convinced that a shadowy organization called the NHK is responsible for engineering his condition. When a girl named Misaki appears and offers to cure him through a mysterious project, he agrees, mostly because refusing would require more effort. What follows is a bleakly funny, often painful look at social withdrawal, depression, and mutual dependence, as two damaged people attempt to fix each other while carefully avoiding any honesty about why they need it.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Tatsuhiko Takimoto's semi-autobiographical novel by Gonzo, Welcome to the N.H.K. is regarded as one of anime's most unflinching portrayals of depression, social anxiety, and the specific despair of hikikomori isolation. Its willingness to be genuinely unpleasant about its subject, rather than romanticizing withdrawal, gives it lasting credibility. The series has maintained a devoted following among viewers who found its depiction of mental illness uncomfortably accurate, and it remains a standard recommendation for anime dealing seriously with psychological struggle. Its bleak humor keeps the material watchable even at its heaviest moments.
