Story

Synopsis

During Lum birth celebration on the Oni homeworld, an administrative postal oversight accidentally left out an eccentric sorceress, who cursed the infant princess to never achieve lasting happiness with her true love. In contemporary Tomobiki, a surreal amusement park opens, drawing Ataru Moroboshi, Lum, and their eccentric friends. During a bizarre magic demonstration, Ataru is magically transfigured into a massive pink hippopotamus. Desperately chasing the mysterious traveling magician across shifting dimensional illusions and alternate timelines, Lum must conquer fate and time itself to restore her beloved darling to human form.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released theatrically in January 1985 under Studio Deen and directed by Kazuo Yamazaki, this third *Urusei Yatsura* cinematic installment commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of Shogakukan. Stepping in after Mamoru Oshii departure, Yamazaki delivered a visually inventive and emotionally grounded narrative balancing Takahashi characteristic slapstick with poignant fairy-tale romance. Featuring fluid character animation supervised by Akemi Takada and a romantic musical score, the production was warmly embraced by fans for its heartfelt portrayal of Lum unconditional devotion.
