A demon named Sesshomaru's rival wields So'unga, the third sword forged from Inuyasha's father's fang, and its awakening threatens destruction on a scale that forces the half-demon and his full-demon brother into cooperation neither of them wants. Kagome, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo are pulled into a conflict rooted entirely in the legacy of a father Inuyasha never knew. The film pairs its large-scale demon combat with the franchise's ongoing questions about inheritance and belonging. Every confrontation between the brothers is about a father neither of them knew.

Produced by Sunrise and adapted from Rumiko Takahashi's manga, Swords of an Honorable Ruler is generally regarded as the strongest of the four Inuyasha films, valued particularly for foregrounding the relationship between Inuyasha and Sesshomaru. Takahashi is among the most commercially successful manga artists in history, and Inuyasha became one of the most internationally recognized anime of the early 2000s, particularly through television syndication in North America. Its focus on the sibling relationship is the main reason fans rank it highest among the four films, and the franchise's international reach was considerable.
