Story

Synopsis

Ataru Moroboshi is selected at random to defend Earth in a game of tag against an invading alien race, and his victory is achieved entirely through lechery rather than courage. Lum, the oni-horned princess he was competing against, interprets his shouted celebration as a marriage proposal and moves in permanently. What follows is chaos: Ataru chases other women, Lum electrocutes him for it, and the surrounding cast of aliens, monks, and classmates escalate every ordinary situation into a disaster of considerable scale. Produced by David Production as a modern remake of the 1981 series adapted from Rumiko Takahashi's manga, this version streamlines the original's enormous episode count while preserving its anarchic comedic structure. Takahashi is among the most commercially successful manga artists in history, and Urusei Yatsura essentially established the template for romantic comedy in anime. The remake was timed to the manga's fortieth anniversary and introduced a foundational property to viewers who had never encountered the original broadcast.
