Synopsis

Vash the Stampede has a sixty billion double dollar bounty on his head and a reputation for leveling entire cities, which is difficult to reconcile with the doughnut-obsessed idiot two insurance agents find when they track him down. On a desert planet where water and ammunition are equally scarce, Vash refuses to kill anyone, a principle that becomes increasingly costly as his past catches up with him. The comedy gradually gives way to something considerably heavier about pacifism's actual price. Every refusal to kill costs someone else something, and the film knows it.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Yasuhiro Nightow's manga by Madhouse, Trigun became one of the most popular anime among early Western fans, benefiting from strong television syndication and a memorable protagonist whose tonal range from slapstick to genuine anguish gave the series unusual emotional reach. Its Western-influenced desert setting and moral seriousness about killing set it apart from contemporaries. The franchise received a substantial 2023 reimagining, though the original adaptation retains a devoted following among viewers who encountered it first. Its protagonist's tonal range remains genuinely rare in action anime even now.
