Story

Synopsis

In this world, public trust is literally quantified, tracked as a visible number on everyone's wrist, and the person who commands the most trust becomes X, a hero granted extraordinary power by belief itself. But trust is fickle, and a hero built entirely on public perception is only ever one scandal, rumor, or mistake away from losing everything that made them powerful in the first place. It is a sharp, unusual superhero premise that doubles as pointed commentary on fame, reputation, and how quickly collective goodwill can curdle into collective outrage.

Tu Bian Yingxiong X, released internationally as To Be Hero X, is a Chinese donghua co-produced by BeDream, Bilibili, and Aniplex, animated across studios including PB Animation Company, Studio LAN, and Paper Plane Animation Studio, and premiered in April 2025. It is the third installment in the To Be Hero anthology franchise, distinguished by its ambitious, genre-blending visual style and its willingness to tackle real-world themes of public opinion and cancel culture through a superhero lens. The Aniplex co-production also signaled growing collaboration between Chinese and Japanese animation studios on internationally distributed projects.
