Synopsis

Kyotaro Ichikawa is a self-described gloomy loner who spends his time fantasizing about violent scenarios and quietly obsessing over Anna Yamada, the tall, popular, and relentlessly cheerful classmate he is convinced would never notice him. Then she starts noticing him constantly. The series follows their halting, extremely awkward approach toward each other, treating Kyotaro's edgelord posturing as the defense mechanism it obviously is and letting Anna's genuine warmth dismantle it gradually and completely. Every interaction between them is excruciating, funny, and entirely recognizable to anyone who has ever been sixteen and convinced they were unlovable. Nothing is rushed.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Norio Sakurai's manga by Shin-Ei Animation, The Dangers in My Heart earned widespread praise for its unusually perceptive handling of adolescent self-consciousness and for a romance built on small, accumulating moments rather than manufactured misunderstanding. Its willingness to let both characters be genuinely awkward rather than conveniently charming gave it real credibility. The series became one of the most acclaimed romantic comedies of its period, frequently cited alongside Komi Can't Communicate and Horimiya as a modern high point for the genre. Its patience with both characters is exactly what makes the romance land.
