Synopsis
Ren runs away after his mother's death and stumbles into a parallel world populated by beasts, where he is taken as apprentice by Kumatetsu, a powerful but socially disastrous warrior who needs a disciple to advance. Neither of them knows how to be a father or a son, so they improvise badly for years. As Ren grows and rediscovers the human world, he has to decide which of the two places he belongs to, and what the darkness he carries actually is. Every year they spend together makes the eventual separation considerably harder.

Written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, The Boy and the Beast continues his recurring interest in unconventional family structures, following Wolf Children and Summer Wars. The film performed strongly at the Japanese box office and earned international distribution, further establishing Hosoda as one of the most prominent directors working outside the Ghibli tradition. Its portrayal of a makeshift father and son who become family through sustained proximity and mutual irritation rather than instinct is generally cited as its greatest strength. Its depiction of chosen family remains the strongest element of the film.
