Synopsis

Years after the tragedies that shaped master storyteller Yakumo's life, this continuation shifts focus to Konatsu, daughter of his late friend and rival, and Yotaro, the ex-convict turned devoted rakugo apprentice raising her adopted children. As Yakumo grows older and rakugo itself struggles to stay relevant in a changing Japan, the show explores whether tradition can survive without losing what made it worth preserving in the first place. It is quieter and more generational than its predecessor, trading raw tragedy for a thoughtful meditation on legacy, art, and what we owe the people who came before us.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen is the second season of the anime adaptation of Haruko Kumota's manga, produced by Studio Deen, and airing in 2017 as a direct continuation of the acclaimed first season. It is celebrated for its unusually mature, slow-paced storytelling and its deep respect for the traditional Japanese art of rakugo, incorporating lengthy, faithfully performed storytelling sequences into its episodes. Critics widely praised this second season for successfully broadening the story beyond Yakumo's tragic backstory into a genuine multigenerational drama, cementing the series as one of the most acclaimed and distinctive anime about art and craft.
