Synopsis
Utena Tenjou wants to be a prince, which is not a role her school or her society has any interest in offering her. Arriving at Ohtori Academy, she is drawn into a series of formal duels for possession of Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride, whose engagement supposedly grants the power to revolutionize the world. The duels repeat with escalating variations, the symbolism accumulates relentlessly, and the story gradually reveals itself as an examination of abuse, gender, and the stories people tell to survive.
