Synopsis

Sakuta Azusagawa encounters a young girl who appears to be Shoko Makinohara, the person who saved his life years earlier, except she is a child and the Shoko he knows is not. As Adolescence Syndrome complicates the situation further, Sakuta finds himself caught between two versions of the same person and a truth about her condition that he cannot fix by simply understanding it. The film retains the franchise's mix of pseudo-scientific supernatural phenomena and grounded emotional honesty about adolescence, loss, and unfair outcomes. Nothing here resolves as cleanly as Sakuta would like it to.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Hajime Kamoshida's light novels by CloverWorks, this film continues the Rascal Does Not Dream franchise, which built its reputation on using supernatural phenomena as metaphors for genuine adolescent psychological struggles. The series stands out among light novel adaptations for the quality of its dialogue and the seriousness with which it treats its characters' emotional problems. Shoko's storyline in particular is regarded by fans as the franchise's most affecting material, making this film a significant emotional entry rather than a supplementary side story. Its handling of grief and inevitability gives the film unusual emotional weight.
