When ambitious scientists clone a fossil of the elusive mythical creature Mew, they accidentally engineer Mewtwo, a genetically modified creature endowed with supreme psychic intellect. Horrified to discover that human researchers created him solely as a disposable weapon of destruction, Mewtwo annihilates the laboratory in fury. Luring elite trainers, including Satoshi and his companion Pikachu, to an isolated fortress on New Island, Mewtwo challenges their companions to battle, deploying advanced cloning machines to duplicate every creature. As clashing clones battle across the stadium, Satoshi risks his life to show Mewtwo the sacredness of living beings.

OLM and Sprite Animation Studios produced this full 3D CGI theatrical remake, released by TOHO across Japanese theaters in July 2019. Directed by franchise veterans Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara, the production faithfully reconstructed the iconic 1998 inaugural theatrical film *Pocket Monsters the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back* with modern three-dimensional digital rendering. Dedicated to late head screenwriter Takeshi Shudo, the film commemorated over two decades of theatrical history, featuring a remastered orchestral score and an updated version of the classic ending theme performed by Sachiko Kobayashi and Shoko Nakagawa.
This full CGI remake of the first Pokemon movie may seem redundant on the surface, but does this update add anything to the original experience? Callum May has our review from the film's theatrical run in Japan.
