Synopsis

Alien parasites arrive on Earth and burrow into human hosts, replacing their heads and consuming other people to survive. One fails, ending up trapped in Shinichi Izumi's right hand instead of his brain, which leaves boy and parasite forced into an uneasy partnership. As Migi develops something resembling curiosity and Shinichi becomes progressively less emotionally human, the two trade places by degrees. The story uses body horror as a vehicle for genuinely serious questions about what separates people from predators, and it refuses to offer comfortable answers.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Hitoshi Iwaaki's acclaimed manga by Madhouse, Parasyte updated its 1990s source material to a contemporary setting while preserving its philosophical core about humanity, ecology, and the arbitrariness of moral categories. The manga is regarded as a classic of seinen horror, and the adaptation earned strong reviews for its unsettling creature design and Shinichi's gradual, disturbing character transformation. The series remains one of the most frequently recommended horror anime, valued as much for its ideas about human nature as for its considerable body horror imagery.
