Origin: Spirits of the Past
Giniro no Kami no Agito · 銀色の髪のアギト · 2006
Sentient mutant forests fight human survivors for planetary ecological survival.
Synopsis
Centuries after genetic engineering on the Moon caused plant life to awaken and obliterate human civilization, Earth is dominated by sentient mutant forests. In Neutral City, human survivors maintain a cautious armistice with the botanical entities. While foraging for water, adventurous youth Agito discovers a cryogenic stasis pod containing Toola, a girl preserved from the pre-apocalyptic era. When militarized human remnants manipulate Toola to activate the ancient terraforming weapon Isthmus, Agito accepts genetic enhancements from the forest spirit, transforming his body to protect Toola and preserve the fragile planetary balance.

Visually and audibly, this 90-minute movie is everything one has come to expect from a top-end Gonzo production: great artistry, quality animation, excellent and well-integrated CG work, and an ambitious soundtrack. What it lacks is a soul.

Read full reviewAt an MSRP of $39.99, it isn't worth remembering where Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ came from. I advise you, dear reader, to pretend that it never existed in the first place.
