Story

Synopsis

Film: Z pits the Straw Hats against Zephyr, or Z, a former Marine admiral turned rogue, who now leads the Neo Marines on a crusade to wipe out every pirate in the world, Luffy included. Fueled by a tragic past and armed with immense power, Z sets out to destroy the New World using dangerous ancient energy. When the crew crosses his path, they are thrown into a desperate fight against a foe whose conviction is as terrifying as his strength. It is a darker, action-heavy film with a genuinely sympathetic antagonist, exploring what happens when a broken hero decides the whole system must burn.

One Piece Film: Z premiered in 2012 as the twelfth film, with series creator Eiichiro Oda serving as an executive producer and creative supervisor. Its villain, Zephyr, was designed by Oda, giving the movie the polished, weighty feel of the post-Strong World era. Character designer Tadayoshi Yamamuro, known for Dragon Ball work, contributed to its striking visuals. Though officially non-canon, Film: Z was praised for its mature themes and formidable antagonist, and it earned strong box-office numbers. Its prequel short, Glorious Island, leads directly into it, making the pair a well-connected mini-event and one of the fan-favorite films.
