Story

Synopsis

Odokawa drives a taxi through a city full of anthropomorphic animals, quietly listening to his passengers' problems while keeping his own life carefully guarded. When a missing high school girl becomes the center of a widening web of criminals, idols, and desperate people making terrible decisions, Odokawa's seemingly mundane routine turns out to be tangled up in it more than anyone, including him, initially realizes. It is a slow-burn neo-noir mystery dressed up in deceptively cute animal character designs, using that contrast to sneak in genuinely sharp social commentary and one of the tightest plots in recent anime.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Odd Taxi is an original series produced by studio OLM subsidiary P.I.C.S., aired in 2021, and it became a surprise critical hit despite minimal pre-release hype. Its combination of noir mystery plotting, understated animation, and darkly funny social satire earned it comparisons to prestige television rather than typical anime fare, and it won multiple Tokyo Anime Award Festival honors including Anime of the Year. Odd Taxi is frequently cited as proof that an anime does not need a familiar franchise or flashy visuals to become one of its year's most acclaimed and talked-about series.
