Synopsis

Six thousand years before Sora and Shiro arrive, Disboard is a wasteland where gods and races destroy each other with weapons that reshape geography. Riku leads a group of surviving humans with no magic and no power, scavenging in the ruins while trying to find any path that does not end in extinction. His alliance with Schwi, an Ex-machina unit trying to understand emotion, produces the plan that eventually rewrites the world's rules entirely. The film is considerably darker and sadder than the series that follows it.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by Madhouse and adapted from Yuu Kamiya's light novels, No Game No Life: Zero is a prequel film to the popular television series, and it is widely regarded as substantially better material than the show that spawned it. Its shift from comedic game-based competition to genuine wartime tragedy surprised viewers expecting more of the same. The film performed well theatrically and remains the entry most frequently recommended to people who bounced off the original series' tone. Its tragic framing gives the wider franchise's game logic a genuinely grim foundation.
