Synopsis

A thousand years after industrial civilization collapsed, humanity clings to survival at the edges of a toxic jungle patrolled by giant insects. Nausicaä, princess of the small Valley of the Wind, has an unusual gift for understanding those creatures and an equally unusual refusal to treat them as enemies. When a neighboring military power drags her people into a war over an ancient weapon, she finds herself caught between armies determined to burn the jungle away and a truth about the poisoned world that nobody else is willing to hear. Her answer involves less fighting and more listening than anyone expects.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, adapted from his own manga, Nausicaä is the film whose success directly led to the founding of Studio Ghibli, making it the studio's spiritual starting point even though it predates the company itself. Its themes of ecological collapse, pacifism, and coexistence with nature became the template Miyazaki would return to across his entire career. Decades on, it's still cited as one of animation's most influential environmental works, and its heroine remains a landmark example of a protagonist who resolves conflict through empathy and courage instead of violence, a rarity in the genre at the time.
