Synopsis

Ginko travels alone from village to village, treating people afflicted by Mushi, primordial, almost-invisible life forms that predate humanity and quietly shape the natural world in ways most people never notice. Each episode plays out like its own self-contained folk tale, a cursed bloodline, a haunted forest, a person slowly fading from reality, resolved not through combat but through patient understanding of forces far older than anyone involved. It is slow, meditative, and hauntingly beautiful, closer in spirit to a collection of ghost stories than a conventional fantasy adventure, and it rewards viewers willing to slow down with it.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Mushishi is based on Yuki Urushibara's manga, animated by Artland, and aired from 2005 to 2006, quickly earning a reputation as one of the finest examples of episodic, atmosphere-driven anime ever made. It won the Japan Media Arts Award for Excellence and drew acclaim internationally for its gorgeous, nature-focused visuals and its unusual restraint, refusing to force its folklore-inspired stories into conventional dramatic structures. Its influence and critical reputation only grew over time, leading to a live-action film adaptation and, years later, the Mushishi Zoku Shou revival seasons that continued Ginko's travels.
