Synopsis

Brilliant neurosurgeon Kenzo Tenma makes a fateful choice: he saves a young boy's life over a more politically important patient, a decision that costs him his career. Years later, that boy resurfaces as a manipulative serial killer, and Tenma, wracked with guilt, sets out across Germany to hunt down the monster he unknowingly created. What follows is a slow-burning, morally intricate thriller about nature versus nurture, the weight of a single choice, and how ordinary people get swallowed by extraordinary evil. It trades flashy spectacle for dread that builds patiently, chapter after chapter, until it is almost unbearable.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Monster is based on Naoki Urasawa's manga and was adapted into a 74-episode anime by Madhouse, airing from 2004 to 2005 and directed by Masayuki Kojima. It is frequently cited as one of the finest psychological thrillers in anime, praised for its meticulous pacing, dense European setting, and refusal to offer easy moral answers about good and evil. Urasawa's reputation as a master of suspense was cemented largely through this series, and Monster remains a benchmark recommendation for viewers looking for anime that plays more like a literary crime novel than a typical genre show.
