Story
Synopsis
This film continues directly from the television series, pushing Riko and Reg even deeper into the Abyss as they pursue answers about Riko's mother and the true nature of the pit's most dangerous layers. What they find down there is some of the franchise's most harrowing material yet, forcing brutal, permanent sacrifices that test exactly how far these two children are willing to go for the truth. It does not soften the series' willingness to inflict genuine horror on its young leads, delivering a gut-wrenching escalation that reshapes their journey going forward.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Made in Abyss Movie 3: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei, known as Dawn of the Deep Soul, is based on Akihito Tsukushi's manga, animated by Kinema Citrus, and released theatrically in 2020. Unlike the first two Made in Abyss films, which recapped the television series, this entry contains substantial new original content continuing the story directly, bridging the gap toward the second television season. It was praised, and infamous, for pushing the franchise's signature combination of whimsical visuals and genuine trauma even further, cementing Made in Abyss's reputation for refusing to flinch from real horror.

The new Made in Abyss movie is a direct sequel to the TV series, and by this point, the darkness is impossible to escape from.

A disturbing pleasure to once more venture into the Abyss with Riko and her friends, even if the film format doesn’t suit the story as well as a series structure and the Abyss is a better antagonist than any other character
