Synopsis

Eikichi Onizuka used to lead a motorcycle gang; now he wants to be the greatest teacher in Japan, mostly, he claims, so he can meet more high school girls. What starts as a joke of a premise quickly becomes something genuinely touching, as Onizuka's unconventional, rule-breaking methods repeatedly reach troubled, cynical students that the school's rigid system had already given up on. Loud, crude, and frequently ridiculous on the surface, the show hides real sincerity underneath: a belief that kids written off as hopeless just need someone willing to actually show up for them.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Great Teacher Onizuka is based on Tooru Fujisawa's manga, animated by Studio Pierrot, and aired from 1999 to 2000. It became a landmark of the delinquent-turned-mentor genre, beloved for balancing outrageous slapstick comedy with genuinely earnest storytelling about troubled youth, broken families, and the failures of a rigid education system. Eikichi Onizuka remains one of anime's most iconic teacher characters decades later, and the series' blend of raunchy humor and heartfelt drama influenced a wide swath of later school-set anime, cementing its status as a beloved classic of its era.
