Story
Synopsis
Iori Kitahara enrolls at a coastal university hoping for a quiet, girlfriend-filled college life, only to get dragged into the orbit of his upperclassmen's diving club, a group defined almost entirely by shirtless posturing and legendary drinking contests. What follows is a relentlessly loud, gag-driven comedy about hazing rituals, misplaced pride, and the surprisingly wholesome bonds that form between a group of loud, shirtless idiots who'd genuinely do anything for each other. Diving occasionally happens too, though it's rarely the main event compared to the chaos surrounding it.

Based on Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka's manga, Grand Blue Dreaming became a surprise cult hit for its unusually committed physical comedy, with Zero-G's animators reportedly throwing serious effort into exaggerated drunken slapstick sequences that go far beyond typical comedy anime budgets. Its raunchy, over-the-top humor earned it a passionate fanbase that considers it one of the funniest anime of its era, even though the diving club premise ends up being almost incidental to the actual plot.
