Synopsis

In the year 2032, three years after the disappearance of Major Motoko Kusanagi into the vast digital network, Section 9 operative Batou navigates a hollow existence with his synthetic body and his basset hound. Partnered with human detective Togusa, Batou is assigned to investigate a string of gruesome homicides committed by gynoids, female sex androids manufactured by the Locus Solus corporation. Before murdering their wealthy owners, the androids deliberately committed suicide. Delving into the criminal underworld of northern offshore territories, Batou and Togusa uncover a dark network that illegally harvests human souls for consumer electronics.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Batou and Togusa infiltrate Locus Solus's factory ship and discover the corporation utilizes an illegal ghost-dubbing machine to clone the souls of kidnapped human girls into sex androids, making them feel real to buyers. The victims deliberately caused the androids to malfunction and kill to attract police intervention. When rogue android security forces swarm Batou, Motoko Kusanagi temporarily downloads her consciousness into a nearby combat gynoid to fight alongside him. Together, they eliminate the automated defenses, liberate the surviving human children, and confirm Batou's quiet faith that Motoko still watches over him from the net.
