Synopsis

This film steps away from Tohru Honda's present to tell the story of her parents, Katsuya and Kyoko, and how two damaged people found each other before Tohru was born. Kyoko's past as a violent, abandoned teenager and Katsuya's quiet insistence on seeing her as worth saving form a love story that reframes everything viewers understood about Tohru's relentless kindness. Framed around material adapted from the manga's flashback chapters, it explains where that kindness came from and exactly how much it cost the woman who taught it to her.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by TMS Entertainment as a companion piece to the acclaimed 2019 Fruits Basket remake, Prelude adapts backstory chapters that the original 2001 adaptation never reached. Based on Natsuki Takaya's manga, Fruits Basket is one of the most beloved shojo series ever published, and the remake earned praise for finally adapting the story in full with modern production values. This film gave fans the Katsuya and Kyoko material they had long wanted animated, along with an epilogue segment, and it functions best as a closing chapter for viewers who have already finished the main series.
