Following the tragic death of her mother in a car accident, sweet-natured high schooler Tohru Honda lives secretly in a tent in the forest to avoid burdening her grandfather. Her tent is discovered on private property belonging to the wealthy Sohma clan, whose members include school prince Yuki Sohma and his novelist cousin Shigure. Welcoming Tohru into their home as a housekeeper, a sudden household mishap causes Tohru to stumble into Yuki, Shigure, and their hot-headed cousin Kyo. To her shock, the boys transform into the Rat, Dog, and Cat of the Chinese zodiac, exposing their ancient family curse.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Tohru learns that thirteen members of the Sohma family are cursed to transform into zodiac animals whenever hugged by members of the opposite sex or weakened by physical stress. Tohru meets other afflicted members, offering unconditional empathy to traumatized children like Momiji, Hatsuharu, and Hatori. The curse's darkest secret surfaces during a rainstorm when Kyo's bracelet of human bones is removed, revealing his true form: a grotesque, rotting monstrosity. Instead of fleeing in terror, Tohru embraces Kyo in the mud, crying and accepting his pain unconditionally. Tohru's love frees Kyo's soul, inspiring her to break the zodiac curse permanently.
