In a sleepy rural village in the Kingdom of Rebelio, middle-aged swordsman Beryl Gardinand runs a humble fencing dojo inherited from his father. Self-deprecating to a fault, Beryl views himself as a washed-up country bumpkin whose prime passed long ago. His quiet bachelor life is upended when his former star pupil, Allucia Citrus, now the celebrated commander of the Liberion Royal Knights, visits him with an official summons: Beryl has been appointed special sword instructor to the royal guard. Unaware that his relentless fundamentals have made him one of the most terrifying master swordsmen on the continent, Beryl hesitantly travels to the royal capital.

Adapted from the popular light novel series written by Shigeru Sagazaki with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, the anime adaptation was co-produced by studios Passione and Hayabusa Film. The narrative subverts typical overpowered fantasy tropes through Beryl's chronic lack of self-awareness, contrasting his modest rustic mindset against the awe of his accomplished former disciples and elite knightly peers as he effortlessly parries mythical beasts, rogue mercenaries, and political assassins.

It doesn't blaze any trails and like the protagonist it isn't flashy. It is however thoroughly enjoyable with great characters and a comfortable setting.
