Synopsis
The second chapter of the Gaiden trilogy delves into the dark, hidden history of the Fuuma clan, a feared ninja clan residing in an isolated underground settlement. Twin brothers Tenka and Isuke grow up under the cruel traditions of the clan, where children are subjected to merciless physical torture and lethal combat training to eradicate human emotion and serve as vessels for the Orochi serpent. Refusing to abandon their mutual fraternal love, the brothers protect each other through brutal trials, dreaming of the day they can escape to the sunlit world above ground.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The Fuuma elders order the brothers to fight to the death in a sealed ritual chamber to determine the clan's supreme shadow master. Refusing to kill his brother, Isuke allows himself to be grievously wounded, faking his own death so Tenka can flee the caverns. Tenka escapes into the Meiji countryside, eventually finding salvation and adopting the identity of Shirasu Kinjo under the Kumoh family's care. However, the dark curse of the Fuuma clan and Orochi continues to haunt Shirasu, foreshadowing the tragic fate that will tear the brothers apart.
