Synopsis

This special retells the original premise of Detective Conan with modern animation, following high school detective Shinichi Kudo on the night the Black Organization forces him to swallow an experimental poison that shrinks him into a child rather than killing him. Adopting the alias Conan Edogawa, he moves in with Ran and her private investigator father, beginning a double life that would sustain the franchise for decades. The special reframes familiar material with additional detail for viewers approaching the series fresh. Every element of the franchise's long-running premise gets established cleanly here.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced to commemorate a major franchise milestone and based on Gosho Aoyama's manga, this special remakes the original opening episodes with substantially upgraded production values. Detective Conan is one of the longest-running and most commercially successful franchises in anime history, sustaining a weekly broadcast, an annual film series, and enormous merchandise output for decades. Remakes like this exist partly to give newer viewers an accessible entry point into a series whose episode count would otherwise be genuinely intimidating to approach. Its accessibility makes it a genuinely useful starting point for curious newcomers.
