Guts is a mercenary swordsman whose brutal, wandering life gets upended when he joins the Band of the Hawk, led by the magnetic, ruthlessly ambitious Griffith. What begins as genuine brotherhood and hard-won loyalty slowly curdles as Griffith's obsession with his own destiny grows darker, culminating in one of anime's most infamous, devastating betrayals. It is unflinchingly violent and bleak, exploring fate, ambition, and trauma with a rawness that still shocks new viewers decades later, and it remains essential, if genuinely difficult, viewing for understanding one of manga's most influential dark fantasy sagas.

Kenpuu Denki Berserk is based on Kentaro Miura's manga, animated by OLM, and aired in 1997, adapting the acclaimed Golden Age arc that forms the emotional foundation of the entire Berserk saga. Despite its dated animation by modern standards, it is still widely regarded as an essential, faithful telling of one of dark fantasy manga's most influential stories, and its notoriously bleak finale left a lasting mark on a generation of anime fans. Its legacy runs through decades of grimdark fantasy media that followed, cementing Berserk's status as a genre-defining touchstone.
