Synopsis

Koyomi Araragi survived a vampire encounter and came out the other side mostly human, with lingering abilities that keep drawing supernatural trouble toward him. When he catches a classmate who weighs nothing at all, he's pulled into a series of cases involving girls afflicted by apparitions rooted in Japanese folklore, each one manifesting a psychological wound the girl herself cannot address. Solutions come through long, circuitous conversations rather than confrontation, with wordplay and philosophical digression carrying at least as much weight as anything supernatural. Nothing here resolves quickly, and that slow circling is entirely the point.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo at Shaft and adapted from NisiOisiN's novels, Bakemonogatari launched one of anime's most stylistically distinctive franchises, defined by rapid-fire text overlays, abstract backgrounds, unconventional editing, and dialogue that dominates almost entirely over action. Its visual language became instantly recognizable and heavily imitated. The Monogatari series went on to span dozens of installments across more than a decade, and this first entry remains the essential starting point, still cited as one of the most formally inventive anime productions ever made. Its influence on anime visual language is still easy to spot today.
