Synopsis

In Neo-Tokyo, thirty-one years after an explosion leveled the city, Kaneda leads a motorcycle gang through a decaying urban landscape where protests, religious cults, and government experiments coexist uneasily. When his friend Tetsuo is captured by the military and begins manifesting psychic abilities he cannot control, the power grows faster than anyone can contain, and Tetsuo's resentment toward Kaneda gives it direction. The film builds toward a physical transformation that ranks among the most disturbing sequences ever put to animation. Every escalation costs the city more, and nobody involved can stop what starts.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo from his own manga, Akira had an enormous budget for its time and used it on frame rates, detail density, and pre-recorded dialogue that allowed accurate lip animation, all unusual for Japanese production. Its international release is widely credited with opening Western markets to anime as adult entertainment. Its visual influence on cyberpunk, its score by Geinoh Yamashirogumi, and the iconic bike slide have all been imitated relentlessly across film, music video, and games ever since. Its production values remain remarkable, and few animated films have matched its ambition since.
