About the studio
Pioneer LDC began in March 1981 as LaserDisc Corporation, a subsidiary of Pioneer Corporation, taking the Pioneer LDC name in 1989. Based in Tokyo, it became a major anime home video distributor and music label through the 1990s and 2000s, particularly during the LaserDisc and early DVD eras. *A company literally named after the format it was built to sell, which dates it pretty precisely to a very specific technological moment.* Dentsu acquired Pioneer LDC in 2003, renaming it Geneon Entertainment; it later merged with Universal Pictures Japan in 2008 to become Geneon Universal Entertainment Japan, and was renamed once more to NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan in 2013. If you're seeing Pioneer LDC credited on an older anime release, you're looking at an earlier chapter of the same company now operating under NBCUniversal's name, a corporate history spanning over four decades and at least four distinct identities.
