Biography
Yuuji Yanase is a Japanese animator and director whose credits reach back to the late 1980s, including in-between animation work on the landmark film Akira (1988) [1]. He joined a production studio formed through a collaboration between Nakamura Production and Sunrise after responding to a recruitment ad, expecting to work mainly on mecha titles but instead finding himself on a much broader mix of projects, including Disney co-productions [2]. He worked his way up from key animator to animation director over the following decades, earning animation-director credits on Saber Marionette J, Slayers TRY, Chobits, Aria, Gravitation, To Love-Ru, and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion [1]. He moved into series direction almost by accident: brought onto Himegoto (2014) as character designer, he has said he was simply asked to try directing alongside it [2]. He went on to direct Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan (2015), Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. (2017), Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko and its sequel, Leadale no Daichi nite (2022), I'll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History (2024), which premiered internationally at Anime Messe Babelsberg in Potsdam that July, and Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra (2025), largely for the studio MAHO FILM [3]. He has described his directing approach as starting from genuinely coming to love the source material rather than forcing it [2]. Speaking at a 2023 Otakon panel, he talked candidly about the industry's shift from cel paint to digital coloring and the loss of institutional knowledge that came with it, and about staying protective of his staff [4].
