Story
Synopsis
Shin and the surviving members of the Eighty-Six's Spearhead Squadron have found uneasy refuge in the Republic of Giad, but peace does not come easily to soldiers built for a war that never officially existed. As the sentient Legion forces escalate their offensive, old wounds resurface between Shin and Lena, the officer who commanded him from afar and has spent the story desperate to be seen as more than a voice on a radio. This second half pushes the series' themes of dehumanization, guilt, and connection toward a genuinely devastating climax, refusing to let its characters, or its audience, off easy.

86 Part 2 is based on Asato Asato's light novel series, animated by A-1 Pictures, and aired in late 2021, continuing directly from the first half of the season that began earlier that year. The series is praised for its unflinching allegory about dehumanizing marginalized soldiers by literally denying them status as human beings, using its mecha war setting to explore very real themes of prejudice and complicity. This concluding stretch delivers on the emotional and narrative tension built across the first half, and 86 remains one of the more critically respected mecha dramas of its generation.
