Story

Synopsis

In 2013, simultaneous terrorist bombings target towering skyscrapers across global metropolitan capitals, claiming millions of civilian lives. The mysterious attacks are committed by ordinary citizens driven by a haunting auditory hallucination known as His Voice. To prevent total global apocalypse, the enigmatic Dr. Isaac Gilmore recalls his retired team of nine cybernetic operatives, scattered across the globe living civilian lives. Joe Shimamura, the amnesiac leader designated 009, awakens his suppressed superhuman acceleration abilities. Reunited with his diverse international comrades, Joe investigates whether the cataclysmic Voice stems from human madness or an ancient divine judgment.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Production I.G and SANZIGEN produced this ambitious full 3D computer-animated science-fiction feature film, released in Japanese theaters in October 2012. Directed and written by Kenji Kamiyama, celebrated for *Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex*, the project adapted Shotaro Ishinomori's classic superhero manga *Cyborg 009* into a modern geopolitical thriller. Renowned composer Kenji Kawai provided a thunderous orchestral and choral score, perfectly complementing the state-of-the-art cel-shaded digital animation. The film was praised by animation critics for modernizing Ishinomori's Cold War philosophical themes into a contemporary exploration of global post-9/11 religious anxiety.
