Synopsis
Shizuku Tsukishima notices the same name signed out on every library book she borrows, and tracking it down leads her to Seiji Amasawa, a boy who already knows exactly what he wants to do with his life. Confronted with his certainty, Shizuku decides to test whether she has any talent of her own by writing a novel, which turns out to be considerably harder and more painful than admiring other people's finished work ever suggested it would be. Every draft she finishes makes clearer how far she still has to go.

Directed by Yoshifumi Kondo from a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and adapted from Aoi Hiiragi's manga, Whisper of the Heart is among Studio Ghibli's most grounded films, containing almost no fantasy beyond a few imaginative sequences. Kondo was widely regarded as Miyazaki's likely successor before his death shortly afterward, making this his only feature as director. The film is frequently praised as one of animation's most honest depictions of adolescent creative ambition and the terror of discovering your own work is not yet good. Its quiet realism has kept it a favorite among viewers who create things themselves.
