Story

Synopsis

Nasa Yuzaki is hit by a truck on the night of his high school entrance exam results and saved by a girl so striking that he proposes on the spot while bleeding. She agrees, on condition that he marry her, and then disappears. Years later she reappears with marriage paperwork, and the two begin a life together as legally married strangers who have to work out affection and domestic routine simultaneously. The comedy comes from two extremely awkward people being sincerely committed to each other.

Adapted from Kenjiro Hata's manga by Seven Arcs, Tonikawa inverts the usual romantic comedy structure by opening with the marriage and spending its runtime on the relationship afterward, a genuinely uncommon approach in a genre built around prolonged mutual pining. Hata is also the creator of Hayate the Combat Butler. The series earned a following for its warmth and its refusal to manufacture conflict, and it sustained additional seasons and specials on that appeal. Its structure, resolving the romance immediately and then exploring it, remains uncommon.
