On Christmas Eve in Tokyo, three homeless people, a middle-aged alcoholic, a trans woman, and a runaway teenage girl, find an abandoned newborn in the trash. Rather than handing her to the authorities, they decide to locate her parents themselves, and the search drags all three through the city and directly into their own abandoned pasts. What could easily be sentimental instead lands as something sharper and funnier, driven by three people who genuinely irritate each other and have nowhere else to go. Every coincidence along the way feels engineered by something larger than chance.

Directed by Satoshi Kon, Tokyo Godfathers is the warmest and most conventionally structured film in a filmography otherwise known for psychological unease, though it retains his interest in coincidence, identity, and the porous boundary between fortune and design. Loosely inspired by the 1948 Western Three Godfathers, it earned strong critical acclaim internationally and remains a fixture of holiday film recommendations. Kon's early death cut short one of animation's most distinctive directorial careers, and this film is frequently cited as his most accessible work. Its warmth and precision have kept it a holiday viewing staple for years.
Established in 2002 and launched as an independent event in 2014, the Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) is an annual international animation festival hosted in Tokyo, Japan.
