Synopsis

Oscar François de Jarjayes was raised as a son by a father who wanted an heir, and grows up commanding the Royal Guard at Versailles under the reign of Marie Antoinette. Torn between duty to the crown and a growing awareness of the suffering outside the palace gates, Oscar navigates court intrigue, forbidden feelings, and the slow, unstoppable build toward revolution. The story braids real historical events with intimate personal drama, following characters whose loyalties and hearts pull them in opposite directions as France edges closer to the moment everything comes apart in blood and fire.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Riyoko Ikeda's landmark manga, The Rose of Versailles is one of the most influential shojo works ever created, credited with expanding what the genre could tackle in terms of politics, gender, and historical tragedy. Its production famously changed directors partway through, with Osamu Dezaki taking over and bringing his signature dramatic visual style to the back half. The series became a cultural touchstone in Japan and later across Europe, particularly France and Italy, and its gender-fluid heroine remains a foundational reference point for countless anime and manga characters that followed in her wake.
